The inspiration for this project came from the Stroud RE Group’s first two Stroud Running Days of 2000 and 2001. The initial website went live in 2001, shortly after that year’s Running Day, cheerfully hosted by the now defunct Yahoo! Geocities, under the title “Stroud Valleys—Bristols in Stroud”. As such, it was supported by Geocities advertising. We registered the Stroudvalleys.co.uk domain name in March 2003 and the site went advert-free shortly thereafter. The early site lasted till May 2005 when, mainly through lack of updates, the owner took it down. From January 2008, the site’s reincarnation began to take shape, with substantial content added in March of that year. Our web host provider ceased trading sometime during the autumn of 2009. Stroudvalleys.co.uk nevertheless remains live till January 2010, after which date the site disappeared. At a little after midday, 16 May 2010, we managed to restore the site but only after a lengthy wait while the domain name ran out so that we were able to purchase it cheaply, to avoid costly Nominet transfer fees. There was a major redesign in 2012, after which the site was static till some of it was removed in 2016. September 2018 saw a complete overhaul and redesign, the culling of non-Gloucestershire-related content and a refocusing on its core activity, Stroud’s bus history.
